Dose Slim know his social position

I believe that Slim doesn't know where he is located on the leadership ladder. I think this because slim treats people as if he is a lower position and acts a higher position when he is around other people. For example he is more genital towards George and Lennie but he talks to Carlson in a more "show off" manner "I drowned four of them right off". That is why I think Slim is unsure of his social position.
